Sample for using ChatGPT

If you haven't started exploring how AI can help you with some of the more tedious aspects of the job search, consider this sample a starting place. I used OpenAI's ChatGPT to create some bullet points for my own resume. Using a block of text that talks about my achievements, I hoped to have five bullet points that focused on my leadership and organizational skills.

First step is to create an account on OpenAI if you don't have one already. As I write this, the accounts are still free but that may change.

I plugged this prompt and text into ChatGPT:

Create bullet points for a resume emphasizing leadership, management skills, and attention to detail from this text:

I developed and maintained individual relationships with donors who support things like scholarship funds and new building projects. I did this by answering emails, reporting back to them on how their funds are used, and being responsive to their questions in a warm and helpful way. I transitioned  the office from paper to online reporting for 1000 reports that are sent out yearly, resulting in a more efficient process. Celebrated and thanked donors by executing high-level events including innovative dedications and appreciation events, such as scholarship appreciation luncheon and building dedications. Streamlined financial reports and narrative reports on 800+ endowed funds by creating a simplified reporting structure. Hired and mentored a five-person staff who reported high levels of job satisfaction which resulted in low turnover for the office and strong continuity. I was recognized for excellence as a director of this division by external consultants.

In about two seconds, this was ChatGPT's response:

  • Developed and nurtured individual relationships with donors supporting scholarship funds and new building projects, demonstrating strong leadership and relationship-building skills.

  • Transitioned office from paper to online reporting for 1000 yearly reports, improving efficiency and attention to detail in the process.

  • Executed high-level events, including scholarship appreciation luncheons and building dedications, to celebrate and express gratitude to donors, showcasing effective leadership and event management abilities.

  • Streamlined financial and narrative reports on 800+ endowed funds through the implementation of a simplified reporting structure, highlighting meticulous attention to detail and the ability to create efficient systems.

  • Hired and mentored a five-person staff, fostering a positive work environment resulting in high job satisfaction, low turnover, and ensuring strong continuity within the office. Recognized for excellence by external consultants as the division's director.

My final tweak: removed the "demonstrating strong leadership and relationship-building skills" in the first bullet point because that seemed unnecessary. But the rest of it works well!

  • Developed and nurtured individual relationships with donors supporting scholarship funds and new building projects.

  • Transitioned office from paper to online reporting for 1000 yearly reports, improving efficiency and attention to detail in the process.

I've learned that one of the most effective ways to use ChatGPT is to be in conversation with it. Write down what you did in your job, focus most on achievements and add quantitative information when you can. What do you want the bullet points to highlight? Be clear about that. The input you give is essential to the output you desire! And when you receive the output, read it. Carefully! Make sure it's accurate and make any changes necessary.

Have fun experimenting and let me know what works for you!
